Number 8 Wireless is a guitar-driven four
piece from Wellington with a long-standing whakapapa (family) in the
Wellington Music Scene. The band released its debut EP Cut
the Cord in October 2019.
Inspired by diverse musical influences
including Lou Reed, The Specials, David Bowie, the Red Hot Chili
Peppers and Jimi Hendrix, Number 8 Wireless
creates accessible, well-constructed music – including hard rock,
catchy pop and a solid
dose of reggae and funk.
The result is highly listenable, modern music
based on classic song-craft and musicianship. The lyrics are
cleverly word-smithed and reward discerning listeners. Sometimes
comedic, sometimes brutal and ironic, these are songs with something
to say – usually about Kiwis and our place in the world.
Live, Number 8 Wireless makes the most of
this with classy, true-to-label on-stage performances. In
2018, the band won a place as National Finalist in New Zealand
Battle of the Bands. Number 8 Wireless was there picked up by
Grammy nominated and two-time Aria award-winning producer Steve
James, who recorded Cut the Cord at Red Engine Studio in Brisbane in
2019.
